Stargazing in the Scottish Highlands
The Scottish Highlands, with their vast, unspoiled landscapes and minimal light pollution, offer some of the most breathtaking night skies in the UK. For those seeking an unforgettable stargazing experience, our three parks – Ben Nevis Holiday Park, Oban Holiday Park, and Tyndrum Holiday Park – provide the perfect base. Here’s why:
Located at the foot of Ben Nevis, the UK’s tallest mountain, our Ben Nevis Holiday Park offers unparalleled views of the night sky. From your accommodation, many of which feature private hot tubs, you can enjoy stargazing without interference from nearby lights. This means clear views of constellations, shooting stars, and, on rare occasions, the Northern Lights.
Best time to see the Northern Lights: Late September to early April, especially during clear, dark nights between 10 pm and 2 am.
Just outside the charming town of Oban, our Oban Holiday Park boasts stunning views over the Isle of Kerrera and the Sound of Kerrera. Thanks to its coastal location, it’s a unique spot for observing the night sky. Whether you’re camping on our non-electric grass tent pitches or staying in one of our luxury pods, the peaceful surroundings make it ideal for stargazing with minimal light pollution.
Best time to see the Northern Lights: Late September to March, with peak visibility during clear, moonless nights in the late evening.
Situated on the West Highland Way, our Tyndrum Holiday Park offers a tranquil setting beside the River Fillan. Nestled within Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, the dark skies here are perfect for stargazing. Relax in our glamping pods or cosy hiker pods, many featuring private hot tubs, while enjoying the stunning star-filled skies.
Best time to see the Northern Lights: Between October and March, ideally on cold, clear nights away from moonlight.
While the Northern Lights are a winter highlight, the Highlands also offer a spectacular experience during the Summer Solstice around June 21st. This is the longest day of the year, with daylight stretching up to 18 hours or more in northern Scotland.
At our parks, you can enjoy nearly endless daylight – perfect for hiking, wildlife watching, or simply soaking in the stunning landscapes. The soft “golden hour” light late into the evening provides magical photo opportunities and a unique way to experience the Highlands. Although true darkness is limited, the extended twilight means you can enjoy beautiful skies well into the night.
